Why do kites Rip?

For one, they are full of needle holes. When an area is stressed, say crashing onto the beach or water, a rip can start from a weaker area on the kite or a smaller tear you never noticed (Weakest Link) and will continue until the force has dissipated or interrupted. Sun and time weakens fabric as well.
